Links to Love

Some amazing links I've stumbled upon the past month:

1.  If you read nothing else, please read this - a fascinating blog post about how other countries perceive America.  Incredibly interesting and eye-opening observations about our country and culture.

2.  Lately, Chris and I have been having a lot of discussions about the future of Cole's education.  Here's a concise and easy to read comparison of two of my favorite education philosophies: Montessori and Waldorf.

3. This article is making the rounds of the blogosphere.  I love the different cultural perspective of child-rearing and I especially love the "chill-out anti-helicopter parent" viewpoint.

4.  More interesting parenting perspective and a huge reason why I like to let Cole make mistakes is here.

5.  This video (particularly the first five minutes) pretty much sums up what is wrong with our education system in America.  Concisely and accurately put, it's worth a watch.

Bits N Pieces

Some random bits and pieces of lately:

1.  Cole has lately taken to calling Chris and me by our first names.  It's hysterical (and also drives me a little bit crazy).  My not-quite-three-year old yelling down the hall for "MAND-Y! MAND-Y! COME!" is rather entertaining.

2.  Honestly, I was pretty nervous about our transition to our new house.  Cole doesn't always do well with sleeping in a new place...however, this move has been the easiest on him so far.  A few minor behavioral issues and one rough night's sleep, but all in all, he's been doing awesome.  Just one more advantage of him being a bit older - it's so much easier to explain and prepare him for any changes!

3.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE our new house.  Seriously, LOVE it.  It didn't quite check all of our boxes for things we wanted in a home, but the more time I spend here, the more it feels like home.  Some of the things I wanted (like an entirely separate playroom) I have discovered probably wouldn't have been the best for our family anyway.  Our playroom is very open to the rest of the house, which makes it easy to keep an eye on Cole and feel a part of his playtime!  Isn't that great when that happens?

4. Cole has officially graduated from speech!  His language has improved SO much and he continues to impress us with his extreme intelligence.  He frequently yells out directions from the backseat while driving ("TURN YEFT! YEFT ON TABLE WOCK WOAD!"(yes, he knows his left and right)), knows that "b-o-o-k" spells BOOK, writes his name...oh yes, he's a bright little guy that keeps us on our toes.

I promise, promise to be back to regularly blogging soon...moving has really thrown a kink in my routine!

Mother's Day

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in

my heart)i am never without it(anywhere

i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done

by only me is your doing,my darling)

                                                      i fear

no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want

no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)

and it’s you are whatever a moon has always meant

and whatever a sun will always sing is you

here is the deepest secret nobody knows

(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud

and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows

higher than soul can hope or mind can hide)

and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart

i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

Applegate Lake

It is finally warming up to some really warm temperatures around here.  Since it was getting so hot this past weekend, we decided to go in search of some water to play in - enter Applegate Lake!

After a beautiful drive, we arrived at the lake with our picnic lunch:

The beach was perfect for Cole to play - a gentle sloping sandy beach into the cold (but not freezing) water:

My favorite kinds of days - sitting in the sun, watching Cole play happily.
Sticks + rocks + water = one VERY happy little boy!

Oh yes...we were THOSE parents, the ones who let their child play in the water in their clothes...we've been so busy with moving, I haven't had a chance to go buy Cole a swimsuit for this summer!  You KNOW I'm busy when I haven't had time to go shopping for my little mister!
Swimming lessons with Daddy!

Summer days!
